BIOGRAPHY :
Mr. R. L. Lowndes was born in New Zealand in 1911. He worked there as a schoolmaster and on irrigation and farm mechanization projects, and in 1936 became an insurance broker in London. He served in Egypt and Libya in 1940-41, and was captured by the Afrika Korps. He contested the constituency unsuccessfully in 1945. He is a partner in the family business.
