Mr. A. E. Marples, who won Wallasey from an Independent in 1945, was born in Manchester in 1907, After qualifying as an accountant, he started business as a builder with £20 borrowed capital, and achieved financial independence in 10 years. He is now managing director of a firm of civil engineering contractors. Sportsman and mountaineer, he played football for Dulwich Hamlet.
