BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. D. Heathcoat Amory became M.P. for the division in 1945 in succession to Sir G. Acland Troyte. Born in 1899 and educated at Eton and Oxford, he is a silk manufacturer and banker. A member of Devon County Council since 1932, he has also served on many other local government bodies, and is a governor of Blundell’s School and a former joint master of the Tiverton Foxhounds. For 20 years he was a Territorial officer, and from 1940 to 1945 was on the General Staff, and was in action at Salerno. In the Arnhem airborne operations he was severely wounded and taken prisoner.
