BIOGRAPHY :
Sir John Mellor, who won the constituency in 1945, had previously sat for the Tamworth division since 1935. Born in 1893, he was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, and is a barrister of the Inner Temple. He was taken prisoner of war by the Turks at Kut in the 1914-18 war. He is a director of an assurance company.
