BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. W. H. Oldfield, a former cotton operative who was Labour Party agent for 20 years before winning the seat in a by-election in 1942, was Parliamentary private secretary to the Minister of Education. For over 20 years he represented Openshaw on Manchester City Council and is an alderman. He is 67, and was for many years secretary of the Gorton Trades and Labour Council.
