BIOGRAPHY :

Lt.-Col. C. L. H. D. Bate, a former Regular Army officer, aged 51, was born at Ladysmith and is now a director of a merchants’ import and export business. After two years’ service oversea in the 1914-18 war he was with the Danzig Plebiscite Force in 1920, the West African Frontier Force, 1920-25, the Army of the Rhine, 1927-28, and in India, 1928-32. Recalled on the outbreak of war, he served in North Africa and Italy.
