BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. A. L. Symonds, who became first Labour member for Cambridge in 1945 at the age of 34, was formerly a school teacher. By scholarships from an elementary school he went to Perse School and Jesus College, Cambridge. He gained an open scholarship in classics, and graduated with honours in Classics and English. He was chairman of the University Labour Club, and a half-Blue for lacrosse. He saw a good deal of service in the war, and was twice mentioned in dispatches.
